Prayer Prerequisites

prayerThis is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.

1 John 5:14-15

To Those Who Will Pray,

Because of Jesus Christ, we can confidently approach God and expect Him to answer prayer; but sometimes when we pray, we forget that there are prerequisites.  Those conditions impact God’s response; and if they are not met, our prayers are ineffective.

A. W. Tozer once wrote, “When we go to God with a request that he modify the existing situation for us, that is, that He answer prayer, there are two conditions that we must meet: (1) We must pray in the will of God and (2) we must be on what old-fashioned Christians often call ‘praying ground’; that is, we must be living lives pleasing to God.”

It is a waste of time to ask God to act or move outside of His will for His people, and we shouldn’t even try it if we are not walking in right relationship with Him.  We cannot have disobedience or any other overt sin in our life and expect Him to do what we ask.  God always answers prayer that is in accordance with His will and is offered by an intercessor who is living in a manner that pleases Him.

The implications of that are huge.

So let’s pray according to “His good, pleasing and perfect will,” [Ephesians 4:1] and live “worthy of the calling.” [Romans 12:2]
